Elections
Elections for the whole council are held every five years – the next being May 2022. Vacancies that arise in between may be filled by elections at the request of residents, or co-option.
Six Community Councillors represent the Community Ward of St Nicholas and four represent the Community ward of Bonvilston – giving the Community Council ten Councillors/Members.
Members are elected by people on the electoral register who live in the Community Wards providing a contested election is held e.g. if ten or fewer people seek election, there will be an “uncontested” election, which means that there will be no poll and the candidates will be automatically “elected” – however, there is a possibility that elections will still be called in future. If more people seek election than seats available there will be a “contested” election and a poll will take place.
Ideally, there will more candidates than available seats. In reality many councils have insufficient candidates standing at election. This means that the remaining seats have to be filled by “co-option”, or in other words the Council can choose to appoint a new member of the council rather than the electorate choosing who it elects.
The polling station for residents living in the St Nicholas Community Ward is at the old school, and for residents in the Bonvilston Community Ward, the polling station is in the Reading Rooms.
